apple, charity, giving, Haiti, sharing

Hi friends.

November makes me happy because I’ve been overhearing a lot about giving and gratitude and looking for ways to share what we have with others. That’s really wonderful. Let’s keep it up all year long!

I haven’t posted in a little while, as you may have noticed, but I have a better-than-average excuse. About a month ago, a friend asked me to put together a small “book” about pie in order to help raise money at a fundraiser for this amazing organization, the Christadelphian Meal-a-Day Fund of the Americas (heretofore referred to as Meal-a-Day). Meal-a-Day focuses on “doing good works in the name of Jesus” and is involved in many projects throughout the Western Hemisphere. (Click here to find out more.) In particular, this fundraiser will benefit a primary school in Haiti which is completely funded by Meal-a-Day.

Here are a few things you may not know about education in Haiti. (I didn’t.)

Only 67% of primary school age children are enrolled in a school.

Only about 53% of Haitians are literate.

90% of schools are international private schools or are run by churches. (That means only 10% are public.) Many children never have the opportunity to attend school at all. And, of course, the situation has only declined in the aftermath of the 2010 earthquake.

“Currently, about 200 preschool-6th grade students attend this primary school. This fundraiser will aid the school is many ways: providing salaries for teachers, feeding the students a nutritious meal each day (usually the only daily meal they regularly receive), keeping the lights on longer, and equipping the school with the supplies and resources to continue to grow as a beacon of hope in the community. The school is open to students in the community. Although not required, about 70% of the school’s students go to the church on Sunday. The school is becoming a well recognized place of spiritual refuge that educates and empowers local children, who otherwise wouldn’t have the opportunity to get an education.”

Since I truly believe that making pie is all about sharing anyway, I came up with a little book about how to make pie-it’s got lots of tips and tricks that I’ve heard or read, pictures of some pies I’ve baked, and a completely original recipe for Caramel Apple Cider Pie. All proceeds will go towards the primary school in Haiti. If you don’t live in New Jersey or aren’t available on the 16th of November, you might not be able to attend. That’s alright (however, you’re going to miss out on some great homemade pie that I happen to know will be ending the dinner. And no, I’m not making said pies and flying them across the country. But there will be great pie, all the same.) If you are interested in making a donation to Meal-a-Day, I would be SO happy to say thank you by sending you a copy of “Love in a Crust” (that’s the working title, at least.) I’ll post more information when the book(lets? I still don’t know what to call them) are formatted and ready to go, and November 16th has come and gone. For now, if you could leave a comment letting me know you’re interested, I’ll have a better idea of how many copies to print. And I will be much obliged.

For those of you who actually live in New Jersey, please support the “Help for Haiti Banquet” on Saturday, November 16th. The banquet will take place from 5:00pm to 7:30pm at 322 South Morris St., Randolph, NJ 07869. The evening will include dinner, musical performances, and a presentation about the wonderful progress the Christadelphian Meal-a-Day Fund has seen in the Haitian school and ecclesia over the last 3 years. All are welcome to attend. Tickets will be $10 per person. All proceeds will go to Christadelphian Meal-A-Day Fund of the Americas.

Four years and counting…

24 Monday Jun 2013

IMG_0794Nearly a month ago, Levi and I celebrated our fourth anniversary. (Say what!)

I just wanted to throw out a little love to a restaurant in Ventura that we happened upon when deciding where to eat that night. BBQ isn’t one of our favorite cuisines, and we had never heard of the place before, but for some reason we walked by the Saloon BBQ company and felt like we should give it a try. And we sure were glad we did. After an incredible meal (Fig Mtn. brews on tap-killer mac and cheese-vegetarian sloppy joe-fried okra-a cocktail that tasted like root beer, but better) we were given this complimentary piece of pie by the friendly staff. And it wasn’t even until afterwards that I told them we had had pie at our wedding four years earlier.

If you get the chance, go on over to their Facebook page and just hit the Like button. They’re a new place, so I’m sure they’ll appreciate it. Better yet, if you’re in Ventura anytime, go have some fried okra for me and let me know what you think.

mini pies

Mini pies are all over downtown Seattle. I’m telling you, I’ve got to get in on this. What’s currently happening in Seattle is soon to be happening in the rest of the country. Mark my words. Just look at Starbucks.

Summertime and the bakin’ is easy

corn, cream, custard

Today I baked a Sweet Summer Corn Pie. I already made two of them last month, but I couldn’t find the picture I’d taken of the finished product (or maybe I never saved that picture at all?). And I got three ears of fresh sweet corn in my CSA box yesterday. And…oh yeah, I don’t work during the summer. Oh well. There was just nothing for it but to make another one. In case you’re curious what they taste like, they’re very creamy…the texture almost reminded me of flan…but some of the corn kernels are left whole. Definitely yummy. I wouldn’t use anything but the freshest summer stuff, though.

My new puppy Obi helpfully tried to eat the husks of the corn as I shucked it.

The following pictures are all from July. My little cousin Ava helped…and a very good helper she was! She’s only three, born a couple of days before my wedding, but she’s already an accomplished baker.

A Sweet Deal

07 Tuesday Aug 2012

Guys, it’s been too long. I’m having a summer just full to the brim with blessings in the form of friends’ smiles, mountaintop sunrises, perfect beach days, and late night chats. While this means that my blog has become secondary in priority for a little while, I haven’t stopped making pie (and I hope you haven’t stopped checking in!). Keep an eye open for posts about the three pies I’ve made since July…one of them features summer corn. Say whaaat?

For now, I just wanted to let you in on a sweet deal, before the opportunity passes. I’m only in the know on this because I’m a member of Ken Haedrich’s online Pie Academy (and you should be too; it’s free!). Ken has purchased a number of Le Creuset bakeware items and is having a private sale. Follow this link to check out the items he has available.

I’ve been hankering for some mini pie dishes (because mini pies are cute) and a pie bird (because, put a bird on it). So that’s what I ordered. I was very excited when these treasures arrived in the mail the other day!

Now to decide what kind of mini pies to make first…

Happiness

Arrived at my Bible camp in New Jersey on Friday night. I forgot how frizzy my hair is when I’m up here. The ground is muddy, the nights are incredibly warm. I can’t even explain how much love I have for the people here. My friend Ruth Ann just handed me this piece of rhubarb pie.

Happy Memorial Day weekend.

Some Very Important News

09 Wednesday May 2012

This is a post that I am Very, Very, Very Excited to write and therefore deserves lots of extra Capitalization.

A few months ago, Levi (being the adoring husband that he is) took it upon himself to email Ken Haedrich, the author of Pie, and fill him in on my little project. Not only did Ken write back (and he is just as friendly and gracious as you would expect from reading his work) but he told me that he was working on starting a new website and would like to link me on his front page. Was I game?

Was I game?!!

Ken’s new website is called The Pie Academy, and if you sign up with your email address, you will receive entertaining videos that will doubtless improve your pie making skills. I’ve received two videos so far–the first on rolling a nice, circular crust and the second on using a food processor to make pie pastry. If you have any interest in baking whatsoever, follow the above link and enroll yourself in the academy! Then scroll on down to the very bottom of the page and you’ll see my smiling face 😉

Another perk of the Pie Academy…you can purchase cookbooks at a discounted price! I’ve had quite a few of you tell me that I’ve nearly driven you to buying Pie through all of my pictures and updates. Well, if you’re really hankering to try out some of the recipes for yourself, this is the place to make your purchase. Pie only costs $21.95 here!

I am Very Much Honored to be recognized on a bestselling author’s website and Very Appreciative of how kind Ken has been.

I’m having an immensely busy week/weekend, and my cousin Rocco just wrote a post on his blog about pie, so…you can read that here. (Thanks for the shout-out and the pie love!)

[*Two disclaimers…Don’t be angry, people who make cupcakes from scratch! Consider this rant directed to the companies that you know you can out-bake any time. 😉 Also, I didn’t buy my cookbook, it was a wedding gift.]

The basic theme of Rocco’s blog (in my estimation) is the importance of eating authentically. Eating real food, food that nourishes your body and your spirit. Although our society has become focused on convenience, there is real joy to be found in taking the time to prepare food for yourself and your family. If you’re interested in where your food comes from, if you’re interested in using food as a way to connect with family and friends, if you love eating, you’ll enjoy Rocco’s posts.
